The Calamondin orange or “Citrus madurensis” is a natural kumquat hybrid and subsequently is cold hardy. The leaves are small and set closely together, thus providing good protection of the fruit from sun and animals. Mature trees are upright and columnar in form. The fruit are round and small, with a sour and juicy flesh, containing few seeds. Though considered to be an ornamental tree, the fruit make for good fresh eating or garnish and also can be made into wonderful preserves like chutney or marmalade.
